Position: Field Technician 2

Department: Field Services

Reports to: Field Services Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt


Field Technicians transport and collect samples that are used to support environmental compliance and decision making.  Samples are accepted, collected and transported in accordance with standard operating procedures.  Samples are collected using a variety of techniques, equipment and protocols based on regulatory and customer requirements.  Field Technician follows daily schedules on mobile devices compiled in our routing software by the Scheduling Coordinator.  Vehicles, field sampling equipment and mobile devices are provided by Suburban Testing Labs.


Field Technicians are challenged to continuously improve their skills and take on new responsibilities to progress through five Technician levels.  Field Services schedules are driven by sample holding times and client due dates and require flexibility, communication and teamwork.

  • Demonstrate and promote professional practices including personal safety and safety of others while in the field
  • Workflow Management
    • Gather and Prepare equipment, supplies and documentation prior to start of schedule
    • Adhere to all timelines in daily schedule
    • Enter required information into routing software using mobile device
    • Perform activities at client site in accordance with established procedures and timeframes
    • Complete all required documentation
    • Coordinate with team members to ensure all deadlines are met in an efficient manner
  • Represent STL in the field in a positive professional manner - Interact and communicate with clients and co-workers in a professional, effective manner
  • Utilize available technology and reference materials to make decisions
  • Perform basic maintenance on vehicles, equipment and instrumentation
  • Perform routine quality assurance checks on equipment and instrumentation
  • Investigate and resolve basic on site issues
  • Continuously improve processes to maximize quality, turnaround time and minimize costs
  • Actively work with team members and management to achieve STLs goals
  • Maintain clean and organized vehicle and return shared workspaces and equipment to appropriate condition
  • Maintain inventory of supplies relevant to assigned sample collections
  • Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of the following:
    • Field Services Systems, Equipment, Instrumentation and technology
    • Sample Receiving and sample storage systems
    • Sample container protocols
      • Analysis holding time and preservation requirements
      • Laboratory capabilities and capacity
      • Basic regulatory programs and client specific needs relative to assigned activities
    • Creates and updates customer notes, site plans and COC project comments

  • Ability to navigate, drive and safely arrive at client sites
  • Proficient in Mobile technology (Microsoft Office, iOS, email, and other software)
  • Ability to work outside of scheduled hours as required to meet client / workload needs
  • Ability to execute on assigned activities in an efficient manner, multi task and support others
  • Enjoys working in a team environment, but can also function independently
  • A willingness to learn new things
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with an outgoing personality and a good sense of humor

Physical Requirements

  • The physical activity of this position includes balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
  • This work is considered medium work, with the ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature.
  • The worker is subject to environmental conditions.

  • Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record and personal vehicle insurance
