Position: Laboratory Supervisor

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Operations Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

The Laboratory Supervisor is a key member of the Leadership team and is responsible for ensuring the generation of accurate, timely and cost-effective analytical data used to support environmental decision making.  The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the operations of their assigned department including overseeing scheduling, monitoring capacity and reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).    

 

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate commitment to Suburban Testing Lab's (STL) Mission Statement, Core Values and Operating Principles
  • Actively participate in continuous process improvements focused on customer requirements, quality, and production efficiency
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with operating standards and processes that support customer and regulatory requirements in the most effective and efficient manner. Recommend changes as appropriate
  • Monitor and report laboratory department capacity and costs of each analysis and communicate with sales team to fill capacity and improve profitability
  • Work with Quality Assurance and Client Services to investigate, correct and prevent client and data quality issues
  • Develop and maintain extensive knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
    • Laboratory methods, technology, capabilities and capacity
    • Laboratory Accreditation and Quality Assurance
    • Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical Instrumentation and supporting equipment
    • Regulatory Programs relevant to analyses performed in each department
    • Client specific needs and expectations
    • Application and interpretation of results generated by the laboratory
    • Advanced operation of LIMS and other computer systems

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Lead responsible teams to meet department objectives and actions
  • Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
  • Set goals for performance, monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching
  • Measure and drive key performance metrics that align with overall company goals and focus on maintaining the highest standards of quality, customer satisfaction, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Use these measurements to monitor and manage performance
  • Oversee training and development of Laboratory Analysts, Technicians and support staff
  • Lead project teams by creating effective project plans and effectively execute on plans including meeting all deadlines
  • Maintain timekeeping and monitor overtime
  • Prepare and carry out performance reviews

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to and including 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Engage in the following movements: Balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, picking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion
  • The incumbent is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines
  • The incumbent is potentially subject to conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: odors, gases, poor ventilation

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science or related field required
  • 3 years of Leadership Experience preferred
